9 stress-busting tips for primary school teachers

Ahead of the new academic year, we asked our Facebook community to let us know their top tips for reducing stress in the classroom - along with some motivational support for fellow teaching staff.

So, grab a cuppa and have a read through some of the responses below — because stress can be dealt with and you CAN do it!

1. Make a list.

Creating a list is a great way to prioritise and realise how much you have to get through. Don’t be afraid to break your list into morning, afternoon – or even hour by hour! Most importantly, be realistic in what you can achieve within the time you have.

2. Ask for help.

It’s not unheard of to want to do everything by yourself, but sometimes it’s just not possible. Ask for some help from other colleagues and your TA — or even students if it could make a nice task before the end of a school day!

3. Just say no.

Telling someone politely and firmly that you can’t do something is equally as important as asking for help. Think before committing to projects. Be honest with your colleagues or your class about something you can’t do, they will respect you for telling the truth.

4. Talk to someone.

Talking to someone about how you are feeling is a great way to de-stress. A problem shared is a problem halved. Get the kettle on and take 10 minutes to talk it through.

5. Enjoy the weekend.

Remember to enjoy the weekend and if you can, switch off from teaching mode. Depending on how you work – make time on Friday night or Sunday night to do some work, and then relax for the rest of the weekend. You deserve it!

6. Take your classroom activities outside.

Connect with nature and teach your students the importance of being outdoors. This will give you some much needed headspace, too!

7. Do some physical exercise!

Similar to tip number six, take time out of your week to do something active, like running or yoga. Exercise is a great way to relax, de-stress and give you a bit of ‘me’ time!

8. Strive to be your best, rather than ‘the’ best.

This #NoteofKindness from one of our Facebook followers reminded us it’s important to not compare yourself to anyone else. Focus on yourself, you’re doing great, keep it up!

9. Never let anyone dull your sparkle.

We loved this #NoteofKindness from one of our members! As teachers, we shouldn’t let anyone dull our sparkle as we allow our students to sparkle every day!
