You might have seen a story in the news recently about the death of the world’s oldest tortoise – believed to have been born in approx.1833.
Well, the good news is… it wasn’t true! Jonathan the tortoise is very much still alive – and he’s still going strong at the grand old age of 193.
It sounds unbelievable – which is exactly why it’s the perfect hook for an engaging primary school lesson.
Real-world stories like this instantly spark curiosity, making them ideal for low-prep, cross-curricular lesson planning.
Start with the “wow”
Kick off your primary classroom discussion with questions like:
- How old do you think the world’s oldest tortoise is?
- If Jonathan is 193 years’ old, what year was he born?
- What has changed in that time?
- What famous world events has Jonathan lived through?
These prompts help move pupils from surprise to deeper thinking – a great starting point for a KS1 or KS2 lesson starter.
